What We Believe

OUR SACRAMENTS & BELIEFS

OUR BELIEFS

We are part of The United Methodist Church, a Christian denomination grounded in Wesleyan theology. For a quick look about sacraments, see below. For a more detailed look and to learn more about the beliefs of The United Methodist Church HERE.

HOLY COMMUNION

Holy Communion is a means of God’s grace. We share in the fellowship of bread and juice in remembrance of Jesus Christ and share in the Sacrament, an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace. In the Sacrament of Holy Communion, we encounter the Presence of Christ in the elements, the communing and in community.

You do not need to be a member of Cave Spring UMC or any church to share in Holy Communion with us. We believe that the grace of God in Christ is found as we share in both the act of communion as well as in communing together.

CSUMC also has a team that is dedicated to sharing communion with those who cannot attend worship services. For more information please contact the church office.

BAPTISM

The Sacrament of Baptism is a sign of God’s grace. It is an act of God that is witnessed in community, by which we are welcomed into the family of God. Baptism is administered to, all ages, including infants. The water may be sprinkled, poured, or immersed. Baptism calls us to nurture one another; it is celebrated with the whole congregation during worship. Baptism is of God and therefore if one has been baptized by another Christian denomination, the United Methodist Church recognizes and celebrates that one baptism. For more information, please call the church office and request a visit with a pastor.

CONFIRMATION

Confirmation is open to young people who have completed the 6th grade, and is an opportunity to claim their faith and church family for themselves. During the Confirmation journey, the young people will have the opportunity to learn more about the Christian faith and what being a follower of Christ can mean in their lives. They also will learn more about the United Methodist Church, its history and beliefs, along with opportunities to learn about other faith traditions. At the end of this journey, these young members will have the opportunity to make their own decision to be confirmed. If they have previously been baptized they will touch the water and remember their baptism. If they have not been baptized, they will be baptized as part of the Confirmation service. In either case, they will take the vows of the Baptismal Covenant for themselves, be confirmed, and join both the United Methodist Church and Cave Spring UMC.

UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The United Methodist Church is part of the Church Universal. All are welcome to attend its service, receive Holy Communion, and after taking vows, be baptized and received into membership.

Denominational practices and standards are set by our General Conference that convenes every four years. Delegates to that conference are elected by clergy and lay delegates from local churches gathered in the regional annual conferences.
